Steve attended the University of North Carolina and played his freshman season (1976-77) for Coach Dean Smith. The Tar Heels won the ACC regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Final Four Championship game.
Krafcisin then transferred to the University of Iowa. He red-shirted the 1977-78 season, and played starting center for three seasons under head coach Lute Olson.
